Entry 163 - The Cure - Pornography

It's hard for me to think of a band that I have more of a love/hate relationship with. The Cure are so incredibly inconsistent - so much so that it deserves special mention.

Most of their discography does nothing for me. Albums like Wild Mood Swings and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me I find way too happy and uninteresting. The Cure are at their best when they are depressed.

Pornography marks one of the albums that I enjoy from the band. The music is ominous and dark. The lyrics resonate themes of hopelessness and worthlessness. This combined with the music, everything clicks on this album.

The music isn't very complex or intricate, its just a guitar, drums, bass, and vocals. The songs are predominantly in a verse/chorus structure with many of the melodies repeating throughout the songs.

Where this album shines above others in the discography is in the highly depressed atmosphere. The aforementioned reverb mixed with the mournful vocals and overall sense of hopelessness elevate this album from being a typical goth/post punk release to something that warrants multiple listens.

The Cure are woefully inconsistent in releasing music that I enjoy. More often than not I pass on their music. Every once in a while though... about one out of every four to five albums - they come out with an album that hits just right.
