It's been quite a long time since I heard the original Messiah era of Candlemass. I recently came across this album on sale so I picked it up to relive some of the glory days of doom.
There is such an authentic quality to early Candlemass. They are just here to slam your face into the ground and take names with how heavy their music is. No frills, no gimmicks, just the music and some damn fine riffs.
The major difference between Candlemass and a lot of other doom bands is their liberal use of double bass drumming. They are not scared to put some double kicks in there along side the riffs.
The riffs themselves have an excellent mix between melodies and rhythm, there is no lack of material to bang your head to here. The way that the riffs are structured gives the album a great flow. The first three tracks in particular feel like three movements to the same song.
Then there are the vocals. There is little that I can say that has not been said about Messiah's vocals and his vibrato. He simply has one of the most iconic voices in all of metal, its a real shame that he isn't as active anymore as he used to be.
Tales of Creation is a classic for a reason, and I have little in the way of arguments against it. The only regret I have is that I went so long between listens. I'm going to have to pick up the other two from the original Messiah trilogy and the self titled down the line as well.
