Entry 232 - Orphaned Land - Mabool

File this record under things I never thought I would own in my lifetime. Orphaned Land has been a band I've enjoyed since the release of this very album. I still have my original CD from 2004 laying around somewhere.

While the releases that came after this one were no where near as good (with the exception of Unsung Prophets and Dead Messiahs), Mabool was and remains my favorite album from these guys. The combination of death metal, folk melodies, and the incredible pacing of the album pushes this release into the next stratosphere for me.

Mabool is a concept album about Noah and the biblical great flood. The album not only retells the story in lyrical form, but in musical form as well. Birth of the Three starts the album off and is a brilliant summary of everything that the album has to offer. There are choirs, death vocals, beautiful clean singing, a full buffet of riffs and some folk instrumentation used. All in about 7 minutes of perfection.

The rest of the album continues to play out in similar fashion. The start of the album is decidedly more metal focused, and calms during the middle tracks eventually resulting in a pure acoustic instrumental with Calm Before the Flood. It's this dynamic that elevates this album from a great album to an all time favorite for me.

The flow of the album is so well constructed that I have a hard time thinking of many other albums that can match it. Mabool has a special place in my collection and I am extremely happy that it got reissued this year. It's one of those special albums that brings the collection one step closer to completion.
