There is a highly ironic paradox when listening to music like Quest Master on vinyl. The music is produced with bleeps and bloops that are just slightly higher quality than the old PC speaker sounds from 30 years ago. Pressing "low quality" electronic music into the purely analog format of vinyl is something I can't quite wrap my head around... but I still enjoy the hell out of it.
Lost Songs of Distant Realms is billed as a long lost soundtrack from the glory days of PC rpg gaming. I'm not sure how much merit there is to these claims but the music certainly does capture that feel.
While the music itself is quite easy to listen to the instrumentation and production are not. This album was not produced and mastered in such a way that the harshness in the tones was dulled down at all. In fact they sound like they may have been amped up just a bit to provide a bit of unease to the listener.
The music itself is exceptionally simple. I'm pretty sure the music never has more than two to three instruments going at a time. This only enhances the vintage feel of the music, and its the main thing that appeals to me.
Lost Songs of Distant Realms is a crazy nostalgia trip for me. I've never heard this music prior to this recording, but I feel like I have before. They so faithfully channel old games like Betrayal at Krondor, Ultima, and Might and Magic that I can't help but fall in love.
