Entry 178 - Anorexia Nervosa - New Obscuritas Order

When I think of symphonic black metal I typically think of grandiose compositions, sweeping melodies, and a grand epic feel. While those properties are present in Anorexia Nervosa's music the overwhelming theme on New Obscuritas Order is unbridled hatred and violence.

Throughout the eight songs present on the album there are few breaks in the relentless beat down that Anorexia put on here. The symphonic elements are added into the mix to elevate the riffs. Unlike so many other symphonic bands the orchestral elements are kind of secondary or complimentary to the guitars, rather than being the sole and primary focus of the album.

The other major difference is the intensity that these guys play with. There are maybe two to three points where the music lets up and lets the listener breathe for a few moments before returning to its visceral assault.

The band accomplishes this through intense riffing, nearly non-stop blast beats, and insane vocals. My god these vocals are what drives this band from being a decent symphonic band to something that is seething with hatred.

One of the few moments of respite comes on Sabat Master Dolorosa. The intro is composed of a female vocal build up that increases in tension before the entire song explodes into a seven minute epic. It's likely the best song on the album, at minimum its my favorite.

On New Obscuritas Order, Anorexia Nervosa put their stamp on what would be their sound. Very few bands can match this level of intensity. Fewer still can match the level of seething venom coming from the vocals. It's a shame these guys aren't around anymore, they really had something very interesting going on here.
