Skullreader takes a mostly clear production and filters it through the lens of early black metal. For the most part its easy to tell what the guitars, vocals, and to some extent the drums are doing. Then there is everything else.
Keyboards, some guitar leads, some atmospheric female vocals... these are all things that I've teased out of the background. Its like a deep scavenger hunt through a dense array of riffs.
The music on Skullreader revolves around simple repeated riffs that are repeated in a hypnotic fashion at a middling pace. This combined with a healthy dose of atmosphere and guitar delay gives the album an "outer space" vibe to it... not so much that its full on sci-fi. More so that it feels like looking at the night sky and taking in its vastness.
Sun of the Blind seems to be a one off project at this point. The album came out in 2009 and I haven't seen any activity since. That's a shame... this album is quite enjoyable, especially on repeated listens where. This is where the items buried in the mix start to make themselves known.
