Entry 186 - Wilt - Moving Monoliths

When I first put this on my turntable it seemed like rather bland and dull black metal with some doom tenancies. The songs were long and largely uninteresting and didn't hold my attention all the way through. I figured I'll put it on a few times, write my summary and move on.

That was Friday night. This is now Sunday morning. This record has not left my turntable for two straight days...

What happened between Friday and now? Well I listened and I heard a bit more of what made the album tick... then I listened again and again. Each time the album revealed a bit more of itself to me.

On one listen a melody would stand out that I didn't notice before. Another time a doomy section would make way more sense in the flow of the song than it ever did before. What once sounded like an out of place blast beat clicked and eventually made the pace of the song perfect in its placement. The list continues.

There are three main songs on Moving Monoliths and an instrumental outro. Each one of the songs is greater than 10 minutes long, and each one of them requires it. These songs have so many ideas that a shorter length would not do them justice in the slightest.

Wilt is a perfect example of a band that I was going to pass up and move on from that ended up grabbing me hook line and sinker. I'm moving on for now, but this thing is going to be back on my turntable in very short order.
