Entry 194 - Cryptopsy - Whisper Supremacy

This album fundamentally changed how I thought about metal. I was very young in my metal journey when I found Cryptopsy. The CD came up at one of my local shops and the album cover looked cool so I picked it up... I had no idea what I was in for.

Cryptopsy plays technical brutal death metal. Their drummer is considered one of the finest in the genre and was my introduction to the gravity blast. On top the drums there is an endless assault of riffs that simply do. not. let. up.

I honestly don't know how many riffs there are per song, but I swear its north of 20 on some of the songs. When every song is around 3-4 minutes long, these songs are simply packed to the brim with riffs. All of them brutal, except for maybe one brief moment of melody on Cold Hate Warm Blood.

The album clocks in just around 30 minutes which is about perfect for music this intense. It simply lets the listener press play again if they want or take a break.

Whisper Supremacy is one of my favorite death metal albums from the late 90's. It introduced me to a deeper side of technical brutality that I did not know existed prior. It's chaotic, sometimes noisy, always brutal... but it also holds up well over time. For me at least I find myself turning back to this album over many other modern alternatives for the genre.
