What happens when black metal meets a movie soundtrack? You could end up with something like symphonic black metal, or you could end up with Empathica.
The way the songs are written on this LP make them feel more like part of a fantasy movie soundtrack much more so than any other album I've heard within the metal genre. So much so that the metal elements almost take a back seat compared to the keyboards.
The album will go for long lengths with only soundscapes and melodies being played out on the synths - almost giving it a dungeon synth type feel. Most of the songs use the keyboards and interludes as a way to segue from one musical theme to the next. Once the melody is established, its then that the metal elements come full force.
The album has a bit darker tone to the other Unreqvited album's I've heard in the past, and that is largely a welcome change. It's still on the "lighter" side of metal.. if its even metal. It's the same conundrum I have with a band like Summoning, where the metal is a part of the sound but not the main focus.
Regardless this certainly is a sound I have not heard explored to the extent that it has been here prior to this album. That combined with the fact that its an enjoyable listen makes this worth keeping around in the collection.
