Entry 262 - Dream Unending - Song of Salvation

How do you possibly follow up an album like Tide Turns Eternal? An album that blew me away with how incredibly atmospheric yet brutal it was. It made such a strong impression that it went onto my top ten list within five or six listens... how do you follow up an album like that? Well in the case of Dream Unending, you just make a better album.

As epic as the previous album was, Song of Salvation is more so. As well crafted as the previous album's songs were, this one right here... these are better. As atmospheric as Tide Turns Eternal is, Song of Salvation has it beat at every moment.

It takes a lot of courage to start an album out with a 15 minute long song. Though the title track isn't so much a song as it is a journey. It goes through so many twists and turns that it still surprises me, even after ten plus listens.

The title track starts out quiet and slow and builds layer upon layer into this monolith of a song. The riffs are slow but expertly crafted. Much of the song (maybe all) the guitars are accompanied by atmospheric keyboards either creating counter melodies or simply adding to the immense sound of the record. It sets the stage for what is some of the best death/doom I've heard in quite some time.

Where the album really begins to go from great to elite is the middle three tracks. Be it the trumpet solo in Secret Grief or the soft whispers in Murmur of Voices or the incredibly mournful instrumental of Unrequited... this is my favorite part of the album... these three songs.

The two epic length songs are excellent in their own right and book end the album in such a way that is going to be nearly impossible to top. Dream Unending within just the scope of two albums has become one of the strongest bands within the death and doom metal scene. I simply can't wait to hear what they have in store for us next.
