Entry 183 - Morast - Ancestral Void

I wasn't too sure about these guys when I first picked up the album. I'm very picky when it comes to old school death metal, especially death/doom like Morast thrives on. I've spun Ancestral Void 2-3 times now, and while this album is a far cry from perfect it sure as hell is a fun listen.

These guys play slow, drawn out death metal. These riffs are droning and deliberate, there is not a single point in the album where things feel hurried or urgent. Lethargic is probably the operative term here.

The music didn't do much for me at first but after letting it sink in a bit it started to grow on me. The album has such a singular focus it ends up working strongly to its benefit over the course of the six songs.

If there is one knock here its the vocals. They remind me quite a bit of a mid period LG Petrov of entombed... just a bit worse. They are kind of half spoken half barked, not really my thing. They fit with the music to some extent but the music could have done with a bit more dynamic vocals.

Overall I think this ones a decent slab of old school death metal with a heavy focus on doom tempos. Not my bread and butter but it certainly has its place in the collection.
