Entry 203 - Apparatus - Yonder Yawns the Universe

I've been trying to spend more time with my newer records. Records that may have only gotten a spin or two previously I'm letting sit on the table for a day or two before really formulating an opinion. With an album like Yonder Yawns the Universe this makes all the difference in the world.

Sometimes an album takes time to marinate and simmer for some time before it shows its true colors. This is especially true with more experimental projects, of which the Apparatus are one.

The riffs on Yonder Yawns the Universe have no hooks to speak of, nor do they have any immediately obvious melodies at all. Instead we are given notes and tones that sound somewhat akin to sounds decaying or rotting. Not every single note has this quality, but decay seems to be the overarching theme of the music on the album.

The songs have no rhyme or reason to their structure either. One moment we are hearing someones manifesto as they go insane to a slow drawn out riff. Instantly the band will switch to a blast beat driven noise riff and then immediately back to the slower beat. On the first few listens its quite jarring.

The more that I listen to Yonder Yawns the Universe, the more it seems like its a chronicle of a loss of sanity. The decay throughout the album is not just a decay of sound, but the erosion of the mind. The witnessing of horror unspeakable through audio form.

Apparatus took some time for me to fully appreciate but now that the album has clicked I find myself spinning this album way more than I initially thought I would. This is an excellent but short glimpse into the mind of someone who is losing their sanity.
