Another entry into the eternally long pre-order world that has finally resolved. Another entry into the "was it really worth the wait?" club.
When something takes over a year to get to you from the point of order it damn well be worth it. With Metroid being one of my all time favorite series a lofi remix album was something I was really looking forward to when I first ordered this. There is so little out there in the way of Metroid music on vinyl I probably would have done a blind buy of this regardless of quality.
Now that I've been waiting on this for a year a few things have happened. I'm no longer as enamored with the lofi hip hop genre as I once was, and I'm very over long pre-orders. I've passed up several projects that would likely be good just because the pre-order period was longer than a month.
Enough of me complaining though. Without all the baggage is the album decent? Well... maybe. The source material - at least for Super Metroid - is some of the best video game music out there. Does it transfer well to lofi? Well... it can, but some of the tracks here just fall flat.
Who wants to hear a lofi and calm version of Lower Norfair? That just does nothing for me. Brinstar is cool and could work well in the genre but some of the chord progressions just don't seem to work very well with the remix here.
Not everything is bad though. The opener, Theme of Samus works exceptionally well. Skytown also has a very nice remix that works well within the genre. In the end it all kind of balances out to a resounding meh.
This is probably the last album I'm going to be getting from Gamechops for quite some time. The lengthy pre-orders plus the inconsistent quality of the music makes it an easy pass for the time being. Here's hoping that some more Metroid stuff can come out in the future that is of good quality and not a year plus pre-order.
