The longer I've been into synthwave the pickier I have become about what I listen to. A lot of the stuff I listened to when I first got into the genre just doesn't appeal to me anymore... and then there is Scandroid.
Scandroid plays straight forward synthwave that ticks all the right boxes. The synths are well produced, the bass is full and expansive, the vocals are top notch... everything works on the debut album.
When I first got into the band I was enamored by the bass and how well it was used throughout the album. The melodies were a nice afterthought and the vocals were whatever. As time has progressed though I've really come to appreciate the album as a whole rather than just focusing on one specific aspect.
Now when I listen the bass is counterbalanced by a soaring melody creating a beautiful dichotomy. The vocals have grown on me over the years... the way they have a tiny bit of processing on them to blur the line between human and synthetic is a nice touch.
Ultimately though what puts this album near the front of the synthwave pack for me is how well paced it all is. The double LP format is perfect here, each side plays like a mini EP and can easily be taken in in one setting.
On the other hand if you want to take in the whole thing at once it works just as well. This is an album through and through... on that magically keeps finding its way back to my turntable whenever I'm in a synthwave mood.
