Looking up at the night sky the wonder of it's majesty I'm quickly overwhelmed by how monumental it all is... and also how infinitesimally small I am. The vastness of the universe is truly beyond comprehension, I can't even begin to put it into words. Somehow though Secret Stairways has tapped into this and created an album that gives me a glimpse of this vastness in musical form.
I've found that when I listen to Turning Point that I'm swept off my feet and taken away into the night sky. The vastness of space is all around me and time seems to crawl to a standstill. Everything is in front of me, yet everything is so far out of reach... I am only capable of one thing... existence.
Secret Stairways accomplishes this sound by taking slow drawn out melodies and layering them in such a way that the music takes on a truly ethereal feel. The instrumentals are simplistic, and that is a great testament to their strength. If they were more complex the quality of the music would be lost and by doing so the music is no longer individual songs, or even an album... it moves beyond itself and invites the listener to do so as well.
All this may sound incredibly cheesy (and it probably is), but this album has a near spiritual quality to it. There isn't much to the music, but there doesn't need to be. It's simple brilliance through the medium of dungeon synth.
