Winter keeps reminding me that its on it's way. Every day we get a centimeter of snow and then it vanishes quickly after. With the onset of winter comes cold music, and Cultis Profano fits that mold quite well.
Accursed Possession is a 1995 black metal album released fifteen years too late. Nearly everything here (save the production) is an homage to mid paced second wave black metal.
The melodies are simple and repeated continuously. The drums add a steady backbone without doing anything to draw attention to themselves. The vocals are competent, channel a bit of vitriol and hatred but ultimately are just serviceable.
Accursed Possession is simply a middling black metal album with modern production. Every instrument, note, vocal line, drum beat - they all are crystal clear. It's the one deviation from the formula that the band has allowed themselves.
Everything here has been done before, but sometimes that's what I need. I need the 100th take on a riff I've heard before. Sometimes I need that familiarity and the comfort it brings. Accursed Possession channels this familiarity exceptionally well.
