Is there such a thing as too much Old Sorcery? I think not.
This is a combination of two EP's that were released separately previous to this LP. Each song takes up a single side of the record, each song tells its own story.
The Path Lies Hidden starts with an upbeat and tense melody that immediately brings a sense that something is very wrong. Its as if we are fleeing from someone or something and are frantically searching for a way or any way possible to escape. As the song progresses things slow down into a more introspective set of melodies: we've escaped our would be captors and are now planning our next moves.
The instrumentation used here has quite a different feel to it than a lot dungeon synth. The keyboards have a synthwave like quality to them. Something sounds a bit more retro futuristic about the way the synths are produced than the other works I've heard from Old Sorcery. Not bad, just different.
An Inkling of Void takes up the second side of the LP. This song is more to my liking than side A. The track is introspective from the start, only playing a simple chord and a minimalist melody. This perfectly channels the early dungeon synth of the 90's... specifically Tomhet form Burzum (a personal favorite of mine).
As the track progresses a bit more instrumentation is added in giving the song more dynamics. The main melody continues to drive the song with the background effects, Gregorian chants, and secondary melodies adding to the sense of introspection rather than detracting from it.
The delay/reverb used throughout the song helps develop this sense of soul searching. Even as the song fades into the void the sense of completeness is never lost.
Obviously my preference is for side B of the LP, but both songs have a lot to offer. I have a feeling this one is going to be hitting the turn table quite a bit in the coming weeks.
