Entry 175 - The Night Flight Orchestra - Sometimes the World Ain't Enough

What happens when you get a bunch of metal heads together to form a classic rock group? You certainly have a chance for disaster, but that is not what happened with Night Flight Orchestra. This stuff is pure fire.

Sometimes the World Ain't enough sounds like it could be lifted right out of the late 70's to early 80's. This has all the right components: catchy as hell riffs, soaring vocals, a mild keyboard presence, and just an overall sense of fun.

The production is really what helps sell this though. It has a warm and analog feeling. It's hard to describe, but its like listening to music with tube amplification rather than solid state - it just feels different... more organic? I can't describe it exactly, but if you've heard it you know it - just listen to the drums here vs. the drums on a modern album, especially the kick. You'll hear it.

The real star of the show here though is Speed's vocals. This is a far cry from Soilwork, and honestly I think I may like him better here than in his main band. He isn't afraid to really let loose and let his vocals soar and wail... and they work, they work so well. It's the secret sauce as to why I like the band so much, without the vocals this may as well just be another retro band.

Outside of the vocals the rest of the band is competent... actually more than competent, the music is catchy beyond belief. The guitars and keyboards work together perfectly, and the addition of some female backing vocalists are the cherry on top.

This album is pure unadulterated fun. I need to get some more of these guys on wax. This is the only one I have for now, but its as good a place as any to start with these guys. Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go vibe to some music.
