The idea of cavernous
music is nothing new. The micro genre of cavernous death metal has been
around for quite a few years at this point. However I don't think I've
seen a band fully embrace the sound as much as I have Concilium in quite
some time.
This entire album sounds like it was recorded within
the confines of a cave. Every single riff, note, vocal line...
everything has a deep reverb on it and a sense of distance that makes it
reverberate through my speakers in a way such as it was in a cave.
The
first few listens this made it very difficult to tell what was going
on, but with music like this that is actually a point in its favor.
These guys play rather simple yet incredibly atmospheric black metal...
cavernous black metal. Is that a thing?
The way that these guys
structure their riffs is a nice balance between dissonance, atmosphere,
and melody. There are two points on the album where the metal is
stripped away and we get some nice clean guitar tone before it goes back
into the chaos of the metal.
Desecration is a surprisingly
enjoyable album from these guys. If they release anything more in the
future I'll be very happy to pick it up.
