Lena Raine may be one
of the most important composers if not the single most important
composer for me getting into video game vinyl. Her soundtracks are
simply stunning. Regardless of the music she creates I always know one
thing: I will probably like it.
Oneknowing falls into a strange
space for me. From what I can tell it's not a video game soundtrack,
even though it feels like one. There are consistent themes throughout
the album and it has that "video game feel" to it.
It's
difficult to explain what makes something have the quality of video game
music. Part of it for me is the instrumentation having its roots in
chip tunes. While the music here certainly is well evolved past the chip
tune sound, you can tell that it has influenced the production of the
synths.
Another strong factor is over-arching themes. This is
hardly unique to video games, however they are well established within
video game soundtracks. This album is ripe with excellent melodies and
vocal lines (that are sung in a language I can't quite place... it could
be gibberish for all I know). They give the album a complete feel; they
tie it together from start to finish.
Oneknowing is probably not
my favorite thing that Lena Raine has produced, but it certainly has
her trademark sound all over it. That alone makes this an outstanding
addition to my collection.
