What happens when you take the production values of lofi hip hop, remove the beats, and add the absolute chillest vibe possible? You get Tranquil.
It's early morning here, the sun isn't even peeking over the horizon right now. The darkness has a calm to it, like this is the way things are supposed to be. We're not meant to be tied up into a million different things at once, we need time to relax and take in the stillness.
As the needle drops on Behind Clouds short album the tones that come out of my speakers speak to this peace. The melodies never try to reach beyond what they are, just simple not progressions layered on top of full chords. Piano, strings, even a trumpet are used as the conveyors of these notes but they all have one thing in common: this is music to reflect and relax to.
The album is excessively short... the whole thing fits onto one side of an LP with a copious amount of dead wax at the end. While I do wish it was longer the short run time is almost perfect for the album. It's just a fifteen minute breath of fresh air before moving back into the chaos of life.
Side B is essentially a beat tape remix of the first side. It works well for what it is, but I highly prefer the music without percussion. No matter how chill the remixes are the fact that there is a thumping bass line takes me out of the moment that side A provides.
Behind Clouds has tapped into something here that resonates with me. This album is pure m o o d, something I desperately need from time to time.
