If I'm honest I bought this album solely for the cover... that and it being on Profound Lore. I only really listened to a few minutes of the album before picking it up.
The Endless seems like it's a bit lost. There are two dominant sounds going on, the first being a highly atmospheric post rock/metal that has an incredible atmosphere. The second is a more aggressive and disjointed almost djent style riffing and screamed vocals.
It's that second part where the album starts to lose me. By itself I would never have picked this album up, djent just isn't my thing at all. The harsh vocals also don't really do the vocalist justice. They feel like they are thrown in there to make the music more aggressive... honestly they just aren't done very well and detract from the overall quality of the music.
The clean vocals however, oh man are they good. They have a sweet ethereal quality to them that sweeps me away. It make the transition to harsh vocals even harder when she begins wailing at the top of her lungs... it breaks the mood for me completely.
There are some really good moments on The Endless, and when the music is atmospheric and the clean vocals are going the potential realized by the cover is there. When it switches to the harsher style though it loses me completely... it's a damn shame.
