Entry 215 - Kennebec - Without Star or Compass

I feel as I'm starting to age I have more of an appreciation for quiet contemplative music. This can come in many forms, but the way Kennebec has executed it on Without Star or Compass is likely one of my favorites.

I was wary of this release at first. The lead single featured hip hop vocals that were not initially to my liking. The previous releases from Kennebec have all been instrumental and I feared that he had abandoned this completely with the album.

That all changed when the full album dropped. There are a total of three vocal tracks out of 11 on the album. They are also spaced in such a way so that they have an excellent cadence to them.

The remainder of the album remains excellent instrumental far eastern folk influenced hip hop. There are no words to describe how much I enjoy this type of music, it simply brings me pure joy. Among the artists who are in this musical sphere Kennebec is likely near the top.

One track will feature acoustic guitars dueling with a violin. Another will have a more traditional hip hop beat with acoustic instruments driving the song forward. Ultimately the contents of each song is exceptional, even the track that I originally was wary of. It works in the context of the album.

In the description of Without Star or Compass, Kennebec describes this album resulting from a period where he felt lost - having no guiding lights or directionality in life. That is a sentiment I can relate intimately to, with music being one of the few outlets in my life that still brings me joy. Through this album and the lost direction Kennebec has brought just a little bit of guidance back into mine.
