I knew what this album sounded like even before I put it on the turntable. Every single one of Fief's albums is incredibly similar. That said, the sound that they have managed to create is among some of the finest within the dungeon synth genre.
Much like the other albums in this fine lineup the primary focus here is two to three melodies intertwining with each other to create a mystical atmosphere. There is just a tiny bit of reverb on the instrumentation as well to give it a "played in a great hall" type feel to it.
Much more so than almost any other music I have, Fief feels like it is being played by a travel minstrel. Music that is meant to be heard by people as the troupe travels around the kingdom.
If anything this album has a bit more of the "guitar" sound to it than the previous records. By guitar I still mean that its obviously played on a keyboard but the synths do seem to be emulating a plucked guitar or lute more so than the first three albums.
Fief is a treasure. The music created for this project is some of my favorite that I have come across in the past few years. While they will likely never reach a top ten list, this stuff is just so wonderful that I have to keep coming back to it.
