Entry 253 - Ultha - All That Has Never Been True

Ultha is a band I had not heard of until earlier this year. When I first checked them out the immediate thing that stood out was the cover. It looks like something Ojerum would create and adds greatly to the character of the record.

To say that this album has depth is almost a disservice. There is so much hidden in the nooks and crannies of this album that its taken me days before I even feel comfortable enough to gather my thoughts about it.

I'm very glad that I have this on record because it breaks the album down into more digestible portions. Each side contains one major song and most contain a secondary piece to accompany it. Each of the longer songs are incredibly unique in their delivery, each well deserving of a single side of a record. In fact this is why I've been able to digest this album as well as I have. With it broken down like this each song becomes something to revisit much easier than if it was all played through at once.

There are too many things to go into with this album but some quick highlights include the incredibly dense first song along with its out of nowhere saxophone solo. The vocal work is tortured and incredibly captivating. The final five minutes of the album go into this hypnotic riff and as the song draws into its conclusion layers upon layers of vocals and keyboards keep adding in until the song ends in one of the most satisfying ways I've heard in a while.

Ultha are really on to something with this release. I'm going to have to check out some more of these guys albums to see if they reach the same heights as they have here. Great great stuff.
