Sometimes you need something heavy. Not just heavy... but h e a v y. An album that not only is brutal but absolutely bludgeons you into submission, takes no prisoners... gives zero fucks about anyone or anything. Disentomb is this band for me.
Their latest LP The Decaying Light is incredible. It is undeniably brutal, yet at the same time there are hints of melody scattered throughout the album. This gives the mind of the listener fleeting moments of sanity amongst the intensity that is the rest of the album.
The album starts out with an eerie melody that quickly escalates into an radiant display of showmanship on all instruments... then the vocals come in. To say that Jordan's vocals are brutal are an understatement. They are not simply brutal, they are animistic, demonic... throw in any other menacing term and it probably applies.
God damn this stuff is good. I have it playing in the background right now and there are points where the riffs just grab you by the neck and want to squeeze all the life out of you. They don't care. They are only here to eviscerate everything in their path.
It should be pretty clear the fondness I have for this album and its unrelenting brutality. Brutal death metal is something that is a bit of an acquired taste, and I haven't fully acquired it to this point. That said, albums like the Decaying Light showcase what the genre is capable of... and its a frightening vision.
