It's been quite some time since I've heard Carach Angren. They released several excellent albums around 2010-2012. Since then they have apparently released three more albums, with the latest one being Franckensteina Strataemontanus.
From what I remember the earlier albums were highly cinematic and orchestral musically, while being exceptionally well written and executed in the story telling as well. In those terms not much has changed from the band.
The current album from Carach Angren still has a heavy symphonic leaning. The music is a bit slower than the past albums that I remember, but the quality seems to be there. There are also clean vocals mixed in on a few tracks. Sometimes they fit, sometimes they seem out of place... overall its a neutral addition for me.
The production on here is crystal clear, the orchestrations have also taken a large step up in quality. Both the production and the increase in quality of instrumentation used are a mixed bag for me.
Black metal dances on this razors edge where if you get things sounding too good it loses a lot of the appeal and mystique that the lower quality production has. I can't help but feel that Carach Angren have crossed that line with this album. This just sounds too clean.
The quality of the music is quite good, and despite the production I find myself enjoying this quite a bit. I'm glad that after not hearing them for about a decade that they are still putting out quality music.
