Death is an album I
took a deep dive with a few years back, reached out to the artist to
discuss the meaning of the album in depth. Death chronicles just that:
the death of a loved one of nothing. Each song a specific event in the
journey - each song a moment in time during the events that would
ultimately result in the loved ones demise.
The entire album is
sample based. Considering how layered and complex the album is I find
this truly impressive. Each song has its own feel - the title tracks
disjointed sections, the incredible piano and drum work of cancer, and
the soul crushing pleas of please god.
please god is a song that
deserves special mention. It's rare to hear a song that touches a
specific emotion so purely, so completely. The emotion in question here
is desperation - a whole hearted, yet ultimately futile plea to a god,
any god who will listen. Anyone or anything that would reverse the
course of the ultimate fate of the loved one.
II nøthing II has a
history as a vaporwave artist. With death they broke free of that genre
into something that is entirely their own. It still uses samples, but
the mannerisms and slow nature of vapor is completely removed from this
release. This is the release where nothing defined their sound.
