There are some bands
that have a mystique about them. I can't exactly explain why but they
simply just fascinate me. Primordial is one of those bands, their sound
is just captivating to me and is simply one of the most unique in the
genre of metal.
On Spirit the Earth Aflame, Primordial play black
metal (with copious amounts of clean singing) written in the style of
Celtic folk music. The end result is an instantly recognizable sound
that can only be ascribed to Primordial.
This is the third album
from Primordial. Its clear that they had firmly figured out their sound
by this point. There is this raw primitive quality to the music that is
balanced by refinement that naturally comes from honing a craft. These
two elements are balanced on a razors edge. The end result being the
finest offering of Primordial's early career.
The vocals, quite
simply put are an acquired taste. A.A. Nemtheanga's vocals can sound off
key, and crack sometimes - if you are looking for perfection you will
not find it here. The thing is though, they fit the music perfectly.
There is a touch of control to them but always risk going completely
unchecked - very much like the music itself.
Spirit the Earth
Aflame is one of the finest moments of Primordial's career. While they
would eventually release an album many years later that would surpass
it, this is one of my go to albums from their discography.
