Abyssal Gods was my first exposure to Imperial Triumphant. At the time I had not heard any of their later works.
The
album sounds like everything is decaying. The riffs de-tune mid note,
the songs slow down periodically, the vocals are toxic... everything is
just dying form the inside out.
The second half of the album is
also rather different form the first. While everything is cohesive,
there is quite a bit more emphasis on ambience and atmosphere in the
last four songs. Church bells, violins and other stringed instruments,
and outright silence are all present.
While not as bizarre or
complex as some of the later works from the band, Abyssal Gods still
stands on its own. There are hints of what is to come, but by no means
is it dwarfed by those releases. Imperial Triumphant is a band that
thrives off of change, and this is merely another step in their
continual evolution.
