At the point of this write up I've been binging on ambient music all day. The latest entry come from the dreampunk genre.
Whereas many other genres within ambient can be more drone oriented, dreampunk tends to be more active... for ambient at least. Dreampunk is also not afraid to loop in melodies and beats when the music calls for it.
Transition is the latest album from Destiny, and its a departure from his earlier work. The other album I heard (the self titled) was much more soundscape and drone oriented; perhaps even a bit of dark ambient. With Transition, Destiny is taking a much lighter approach to the music.
The music feels like it comes from a better place emotionally. Whereas the earlier work felt dark and hopeless, Transition gentler and more carefree. Its not "happy" per see, but it does have some light whereas before there was none.
The fascinating thing about Transition is that it gets better the longer the album goes on. The starting tracks are by far the most generic "dreampunky" in their sound. As the album progresses though, more experimental beats and melodies are woven in. The progression from the start to the finish of the album is quite dramatic.
I don't listen to as much dreampunk as I used to. Most of what I hear from the genre hasn't really progressed much from when I was heavily involved a couple of years ago. Albums like Transition though are what the genre needs: something that still sounds like dreampunk yet pushes the genre forward, even if it is just a smidge.
