Having a decent sized collection is a double edged sword. On one hand you have so many records that you never have time to listen to all of them, or even a fraction of them. On the other hand, you have the opprotunity to stumble upon something that you forgot you had. In this particular case I forgot that I had a fantastic album.
Inner Sphere was one of the first albums I got from the Vill4in label. I had started getting into Dreampunk and this release was well regarded by the community.
Voyage Futur on their debut really showscases how to do more with less. This is stripped down, minimalist, melodic ambient. However, it never feels like it.
The instrument selection and production make this feel rich and full, even with just two to three elements going at any single time. Usually with this few instrumentals happening the music can feel stripped back and simplistic, not here though.
It not just that the individual melodies are well done, its their interaction that puts this release into the next level. Each one of the melodies is pleasant individually, they would work fine as the primary focus for a song. However, when two intertwining melodies begin dancing in and out of each other is where Inner Sphere comes to life. The songs bloom from pleasant backdrops to something that begs to be listened to actively.
I love it when a release takes a genre and flips it on its head. This is exactly why I like Inner Sphere, it does so much with so little.
