Entry 041 - Porcupine Tree - Recordings

If I'm honest with myself I really don't like compilation albums. They typically don't hold my interest for long and are a novelty at best. But like every rule there are exceptions. Porcupine Tree's Recordings is one such exception.

This is a compilation of tracks left over from the Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun sessions, b sides apparently. This is something else that amuses me: what bands consider b-sides.

Recordings contains some of the better songs that Porcupine Tree have written. Why these were considered B sides I'll never know.

The track Brand New Soul is a wonderful combination of jazz and prog rock - the combination ends up resulting in one of the best songs they have written. Untitled is a great prog rock instrumental that I can listen to on repeat. The full version of Even Less has me scratching my head as to why it was cut for Stupid Dream. The list goes on and on.

Both Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream are excellent albums on their own. I'm just happy that Steve Wilson and company decided to put out the rest of those sessions in this collection. If you like either of those albums do not hesitate to grab this one as well.
