This album was a blind
buy - I threw it in with another order because it was on clearance. It
was initially on my radar because its melodic death/doom metal and its a
single song for the entire record. Both of these things I tend to enjoy
quite a bit.
The song itself progresses through several major
themes and revisits them regularly. The one stand out lyric being "life
is at war with us." That certainly resonates with me and how things seem
to be going of late.
The music is not really anything that goes
above and beyond the ordinary for this genre. It's standard run of the
mill doom/death with quite a bit of cleans thrown in to boot. This won't
be something I seek out very often, but it does scratch a very specific
itch I get every few months.
Beyond the Shores starts off with a
violin and a harsh wind blowing. The violin in particular is something I
am a big fan of in metal, especially doom. It's only used in a few
passages on the album. I really wish they would have included it a just a
bit more, it would have elevated the album from fair to good, maybe
even great.
Shores of Null plays a style that not too many bands
play. Unfortunately almost everything that they bring to the table I've
heard from other bands in the past. That said this is still a rather
rare style of metal, so it has a welcome place in my collection
regardless.
