After listening to Esperwave yesterday I've had the music from Final Fantasy VI stuck in my head. It also happens that every school morning my son and I play a video game record to start the day off. Today was my day to choose, the choice basically made itself.
I'll just get this out of the way, this is my favorite game soundtrack and game. The fact I get to share this with my son (probably annoy him with it is more accurate) just brings me all sorts of giddiness. Normally he'll be the one giving me all sorts of facts about the games (especially Smash). However this time the tables are turned.
I can regale him with stories on how Terra lost her memory, the dastardly deeds of Kefka, a castle that can go underground etc. He sighs and amuses me as I tell him stories of "when I was your age" (I literally was when I played this game for the first time).
The music itself here pushes the Super Nintendo soundchip to its limits. There are instruments on this release that sound nothing like any other soundtrack I've ever heard. The compositions themselves are unmatched. This is Uematsu's finest work.
I hope that when I'm ready to pass on my son will keep these records and use them to remind himself of these times we spent together. Regardless if its a masterpiece like FFVI or some other random music that we are listening to together. At the risk of sounding too nostalgic and sappy: this is the reason why I wake up every day.
