Europa is an
interesting mix of genres. There is a bit of ambient, a bit of techno,
and also a bit of synthwave. I don't think I've ever heard this
particular combination of genres before, and certainly not arranged like
they are on this release.
At its core Europa is an ambient
techno album - distant beats laid beneath soundscapes that whisk the
listener from one place to another. The synthwave is mixed in
sporadically to give melodies and a bit of distinction from other
releases within the ambient techno genre. Its not often I hear ambient
music with clear melodies and still retain the abstract feel.
The
record is an edit of the full digital release. The edits are done well,
but ultimately the songs benefit from the extra time in the digital to
grow and expand. The record displays the same tenancies, however they
feel less developed and aren't given enough time to truly breathe.
While
I do ultimately prefer the digital of this release, the record is an
enjoyable listen. Its a somewhat unique combination of genres that I
would like to see explored some more in the future.
