Entry 114 - October Falls - A Fall of an Epoch

You ever go to eat something expecting a certain taste and then its not what you are expecting? For me, no matter how good the taste is I'm initially repulsed by what I'm eating. It takes a bit for my brain to recalibrate.

Prior to hearing A Fall of an Epoch I had only heard October Falls neo folk work. I was expecting folk music when I put this on this morning, and I got atmospheric black metal.

It didn't matter if it was good or not, the fact that it wasn't what I was expecting caught me off guard and soured my initial impressions. I turned it off after one spin and came back to it this evening.

This evening I was in for a much better experience. While this album certainly isn't groundbreaking, it is well executed black metal with a heavy emphasis on melody and folk elements. There are quite a few moments where all the metal is stripped away and the band's folk roots shine through.

Its in these moments that the band excels. The black metal is fine for what it is, but paired with the acoustic instrumentation throughout the album is what gives this album its soul.

I still prefer the acoustic folk work of this band but its nice to see them venture into different territories successfully.
