Where Lovers Mourn is an album I remember enjoying a lot when I was younger. Draconian was one of the first "beauty and the beast" bands that I ever found and i was quite enamored with their style.
I saw that the album got repressed recently and I jumped on the chance to get the album along with a few others. Whereas Arcane Rain Fell remained a solid album I really am having trouble getting into this one.
The band seems directionless most of the album. There are passages where they have everything together, soaring female vocals paired with powerful growls and slow mournful guitar tones underneath. This is where Draconian is at their best.
On this album in particular though they change tempos quite often. The faster sections of the songs just do not fit with the atmosphere that Draconian are trying with on this album. I may sound a bit unreasonable here, but when I listen to doom/death I want DOOM - slow, crushing, completely sucks the will to live right out of you. The faster paced sections of these songs lack all of that.
When Draconian do what they do best they are a strong band with a solid vision. On Where Lovers Mourn they had yet to figure out where their real strength was.
