Entry 099 - Edge of Sanity - Crimson

Edge of Sanity is one of the more interesting metal bands in the 90's. Starting out as raw death metal and slowly evolving into the more melodic side of the genre. None of the previous albums would be able to foreshadow the massive album that is Crimson.

An album that's a single song. To my knowledge this was the first time it had been done in extreme metal.

The song contains several main themes musically. The main riff is introduced right away and revisited multiple times throughout the album. This repeats with several other riffs and modes and with them he album twists and turns through multiple genres. Death metal, progressive rock, ambient, and a smattering of other genres are all contained within the song's runtime.

Then entire album is 40 minutes long and somehow manages to remain consistent throughout. Not only are the individual riffs good, but the way they are worked together is remarkable. Despite its length, it feels like a cohesive song.

Crimson is Edge of Sanity's magnum opus. They managed to create an album that blew me away when I first heard it, and still gives me goosebumps when I hear it.

The record for this one isn't the best. There is a fade out of specific parts of the song and the way side A ends is very abrupt and jarring. This is one of the few instances where I prefer to listen to digital to the record.
