Entry 084 - Tiamat - Prey

Tiamat is such a fascinating band. For a long while their evolution from death metal to gothic rock was one of the more curious transformations I've seen within the metal genre.

Prey is their fourth (maybe fifth depending on your stance on Wildhoney) album in the goth rock genre. This is the point where they perfected their craft.

The songs are now more condensed and focused. While there are a lot of themes throughout Prey, they are contained to their individual songs, rather than five or six all jammed into one track.

Normally I would say that this is a determent to the music, however the way Tiamat have put this album together its a great boon. The songs never lose sight of what they are.

In addition to the full length songs, there are instrumentals as well. This is where most of the experimentation takes place. They are used to tie album together, as short interludes. This works for several reasons. Firstly, they offer something different from the rest of the album. Secondly it fills out the album and makes it more complete - they make the songs feel like they belong together.

The music itself is goth rock, pure and simple. This stuff could easily be on the radio, with the exception of the highly Satanic lyrics. Its catchy as hell and songs like Divided are composed so well it stays with me for a long time after the album is over and done.

No other album they've put out matches this one. Everything fits and flows like a well oiled machine. Prey is peak Tiamat.
