Classical instrumentation has been used in many video game soundtracks to great effect. The way that the music is composed and arranged in Rule of Rose is a true standout among those soundtracks.
This OST exudes class; the carefully arrangement of strings, the piano interludes, and especially the vocal tracks. They all ooze sophistication from every fiber of their being.
The true standout from all this are the vocal tracks. They could have been lifted from a smoke filled bar in the late 1920's. A woman in a cocktail dress is singing slowly to the audience which has its attention torn between the beautiful vocals as well as the radiating beauty of the woman delivering them.
I know that is very specific, but that is the exact image I get when listening to these songs. The instrumentals range anywhere from tense to still and calm. Its a wonderful progression using limited instruments to attain a strong atmosphere for the album.
Rule of Rose is a game that has a cult following. If played today, it would take time to get used to the controls and nuances that have not aged well. The music however... that part of the game is truly timeless.
