I am so glad that record labels repress albums. I missed the first press of Tales of Othertime by a few weeks and quickly found out how much the album went for on the secondary market. Hard pass.
Luckily a repress had already been announced, and lo it befell to me on my doorstep a few days past. Now doth it grace my turntable with its splendor.
It's really hard for me to be objective about this band. I kept hearing about how amazing this album was from friends and best of lists - there was a whirlwind of hype surrounding this release. Comparisons to early Dimmu Borgir and Summoning are enough to get me interested, maybe even excited.
When I finally heard it I was disappointed. I expected a continent breaker of an album from the accolades it was receiving. What I heard was something akin to a late 90's symphonic black metal cover band.
As with all good things... they come to those who wait. I enjoyed what I heard so I listened again... and again... and again. This thing fucking grows on you.
While this thing is not the world shattering album I was hoping for, this is a damn good slice of melodic black metal. The band knows exactly what they are and don't even try to hide their influences. This isn't a cover band. This is a band paying tribute to the golden age of the second wave.
