The Nautilus series is
essentially video game soundtracks to games that were never made. They
are beat driven, vaporwave drenched, video game bleep bloop compositions
that I quite enjoy.
Nautilus V is the latest in the batch and it
doesn't stray too far from the principles established in the first
four. The music here is very much rooted in Playstation 1 era sounds,
and I find that quite refreshing. So much of the "retro" themes focus on
16 and 8 bit chip tunes that it becomes too samey and ultimately
boring.
Instead here we get a nice set of uncompressed synths
that sound like they would be at home in the mid 1990's. Some of my
fondest memories of gaming are from this time period so this series of
albums helps channel those memories of simpler times.
Will this
album ever hit a top ten list? Probably not. But I don't think that is
the point. This is just a simple trip down memory lane, and it doesn't
try to be more than what it is.
