I love bvdub - I am
absolutely biased when it comes to this artist and the music that comes
from this project. His album Serenity marks one of the most important
moments in my musical tastes and everything that followed is just icing
on that cake.
With Violet Opposition bvdub is firmly within the ambient genre. There is little to no percussion driving the music forward. This album consists purely of drawn out sounds, melodies, and tones that are put together in such a way that the music drives itself forward... it flows like a river, ever changing yet always consistent.
Violet Opposition is four tracks long, one for each side of the double LP's. While they are all distinct, there are threads that tie them all together. Each one is heavily distorted, the sound feels like its being emitted through fog. Nothing is exactly clear, though there are moments where glimpses of clarity are offered.
I love this effect, it makes me feel like I'm immersed in an unfamiliar place and I'm grasping for something, anything that feels familiar. Every time I think I have it, it again slips outside of my reach.
This album is immersive and all consuming when listened at loud volumes. It can easily be played in the background but there is something about its execution that demands my attention. Is this bvdub's best album? No, far from it - but it is certainly a welcome addition to my record collection.
