Jazz and metal go
together better than one might think. Metal can incorporate jazz
tenancies into the percussion and guitars, and vice versa with jazz.
Prior to Vile Luxury Imperial Triumphant's discography they had flirted
with different composition styles. With their third album they found
their sound: avant-garde jazz black metal... or at least something akin
to it.
I mention jazz, because unlike the later albums where the
influence is more subtle, here the jazz influence is overt. Throughout
the album the band simply stops playing metal and will begin playing
jazz. The incorporation of brass instruments to accompany the main trio
of the band only helps drive these influences more.
You can tell
that the band are still experimenting with trying to find their true
sound at this point, making Vile Luxury a bit of a transition album. The
band is absolutely on to something with this record though. It's an
excellent listen, and while its much easier to get into than their later
albums its nearly as rewarding.
This is a great starting place
for those wanting to get into Imperial Triumphant's discography without
having to completely reshape their idea of music. Something that comes
with either Alphaville or Spirit of Ecstacy.
