Entry 402 - Dark Funeral - Vobiscum Satanas

Dark Funeral's sound may be one of the most representative of what the stereotype is for black metal. Blast beasts, fast guitars, shrieked vocals, minor chords, and BLAST FUCKING BEATS. There is only one speed here, fucking fast...

The riffs are extremely simple, two guitars playing minor chords that interlace between themselves. The lyrics are basically praise and worship songs for satan. The drums only blast... some variation or another, but they are always blasting. The bass is hardly audible and contributes next to nothing to the overall sound.

Whenever I think of the black metal stereotype I am automatically drawn to the first few Dark Funeral albums. It's not really bad, but at the same time it's not exceptionally good either. It fits an extremely specific mood that I get a few times a year, and its a need that only Dark Funeral can satiate.

This particular pressing contains a few bonus tracks in the way of live tracks from around when the album was released. The production on these songs is much rawer than that of the actual album. This ends up being a great strength to the songs as the crisper production on the album detracts just a bit from the atmosphere of the album. The live tracks remedy that completely... great addition.

I really don't have much more to say on this one. It knows exactly what it is, and doesn't even try to pretend to be anything else. It's an album I keep around for exactly that reason.
