Entry 376 - CMD094 - Kagami Tears

This has been on of the more challenging albums for me to get into in recent years. So much so that I have almost sold it at least a dozen times. Today I finally sat down with it, and wanted to make up my mind once and for all if I like this album or not.

The problem that I had, and still have to some degree with Kagami Tears is that sometimes there will be this incredibly awkward key shift that completely breaks the immersion for me. The album for the most part is a deep reflective dive into slowly building soundscapes. They are all rather short in length and each explores different concepts.

Some will delve deep into a heavily phased building of layers that give the effect that the song is recorded under water. Others will explore minimalism to a degree that only a few notes are played throughout the entire song. Others still explore more a cyber punk feel, complete with percussion and a sense of direction that the rest of the album is lacking.

Each song is well written in its own regard and there are enough concepts on here to warrant repeated listens... it's just that at two or three points on the album I'm completely taken out of the sway and flow of the album.

On the final track of side A there is this key shift at towards the end of the song that sounds like someone hit the wrong button in the DAW. One moment its deep and meditative, then the next its up over an octave and sounds completely out of place compared to everything else.

It was this event and a few others like it that completely ruined the album for me. There is so much good here, but I was compelled taken out of my element with these shifts. I've never gotten to talk to CMD about this but I would be curious about the artistic thoughts behind such a shift.

That said now that I've spent some time with the album I've come to accept and anticipate that these songs are part of the experience. I don't like them still, but I am not going to let them ruin an otherwise fine album for me anymore.
