Max Richter is a classical composer with quite a resume to his name. He has a few original albums as well that are not tied to a movie or anything else except for an album published under his own name. Songs From Before is one of those albums.
I really like the idea of this album. It's a string quartet and piano that goes through several themes and moods... most of the morose or melancholy in execution. The minor key is overwhelmingly used here, and all of that is things that I normally gravitate towards.
The thing is that this release is pretty inconsistent in it's pacing. One piece will be introspective and then all the sudden I'll be thrown off by the next piece that has little to no transition into something completely different. It's rather jarring and it's hard for me to get used to.
I'm going to be shelving this one for a few weeks and I'll come back to it when I'm interested again. Maybe knowing what I'm in store for will help me appreciate the album more. As it is though, this is not going to be hitting the turntable very often.
