Entry 394 - Street Fighter II the Definitive Soundtrack Part 2: CPS-2 - Street Fighter II Turbo
There isn't much more that I can write about Street Fighter II that I haven't already talked about. The game is legendary and the music is no exception.
Street Fighter II Turbo does everything that Street Fighter II The World Warrior did but butter. Characters? There's more of them. Stages? The slow speed of combat? Try turbo mode. The music? The sound board is crisper, and the music feels more alive.
So many of the tracks that were already legendary in the first release are only improved upon here. Ryu's, Ken's, Honda's, Chun Li's, and Guile's theme all benefit greatly from the new sound board. The music is the same but god damn does it sound more vibrant, there is an energy here that was not present in the original release, and the game reflects it with its polish.
If I were to nitpick about something is that there are a few points where sound effects are interjected into the songs. I don't know hwy they felt the need to do this, it doesn't add anything to the song. In fact it could act as a detractor to some people. For me it's just a minor annoyance and nothing more.
The legacy that this game leaves on all fighting games that come after is undeniable. This is one of THE definitive games in a well established genre. Without Street Fighter II we don't have the modern fighting game scene... and the music is a huge part of that influence as well. An essential release.
