Entry 347 - Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill

I needed a palate cleanser. I needed an album that I know I can always go back to and it never fails me. I am completely obliterated from work and I need one of very few albums that can bring me some life... enter The Great Southern Trendkill.

God I love this album. I love the groove, I love the aggression, I love the give no fucks attitude. Its like Pantera finally lived up to the potential that they had shown for the past few albums and released a fucking killer LP.

Pantera was one of the first real metal bands I got into when I was much younger. Vulgar Display of Power had just released and I thought it was the definition of tuff guy music. Songs like Walk and Fucking Hostile had me thinking I was a badass for listening to it. Looking back its pretty cringe, but it did pave the way for me listening to Trendkill.

While the only Pantera album I still listen to is Trendkill the others were important for getting here. Trendkill is real aggression. Trendkill is real brokenness. Trendkill is the most honest Pantera record they ever put out.

War Nerve has an insane groove to it that brings a headbang from me every single time it comes on. Suicide Note Part 1 is incredibly fragile. Part 2 is one of the most aggressive songs I've ever heard the band create. Floods is an epic that changes from a venerable ballad to a clinic in groove metal riffage.

This isn't just Pantera's best album, it's one of the best albums out of the 90's. I don't care if it comes from a mainstream band, good is good. And honestly, it doesn't get much better than this.
